Lasting healthy habits - Angela and Phillip's story

Meet Angela and Philip

Angela (46), Phillip (44) and their son Kieran completed 12 weeks on One You Cheshire East's Let's Get Movin' programme at Crewe Lifestyle Centre. What began as a way to help Kieran become more active led to positive changes for the whole family, improving their activity levels, routine and overall wellbeing.

One You Cheshire East is a free health and wellbeing service that supports local residents to make positive lifestyle changes. The service offers guidance and support across a range of areas, including physical activity, healthy weight, stopping smoking and overall wellbeing. It is delivered by our subsidiary health & wellbeing company, Reed Wellbeing.

The family first discovered the programme through a Facebook post. Finding an opportunity to exercise together removed a key barrier and gave them a practical way to start making changes.

Angela said:

My son wanted to get fitter, but we struggled to find a gym who would take an under 16. When we saw this and that we could do it as a family, we jumped at the chance.

Before joining the programme, the family described their lifestyle as largely inactive, with little regular exercise. They wanted support to build healthier habits, improve their fitness and stay motivated over the long term.

Our support

Through the Let's Get Movin' programme, Angela, Phillip and Kieran were able to access structured support in a welcoming environment while exploring activities that suited their interests and lifestyle.

Over the 12-week programme, their routine changed significantly. They began attending the gym two to three times a week and regularly taking part in racket sports at weekends. Angela and Phillip also introduced aqua aerobics classes into their weekly routine, helping them stay active and maintain momentum.

For the family, weekend racket sports became a regular part of their routine, providing both physical activity and valuable time together.

Moving forward

Completing the programme has given Angela, Phillip and Kieran the confidence to continue their healthier lifestyle independently. With an established routine and activities they enjoy, they are focused on maintaining their progress and staying active as a family.

Their approach to health is now built around consistency, shared experiences and finding sustainable ways to stay active together:

We didn’t really exercise at all and needed something to spur us on, and this has helped massively. We are all fitter, but mentally we’re much better too.
